UN Secretary General calls for global ceasefire over coronavirus

UN Secretary General António Guterres called for a ceasefire in all conflicts of the world amid the spread of coronavirus.


“Our world faces a common enemy – the coronavirus infection COVID-19. The virus infects everyone, regardless of ethnicity, group, nationality or religion. It ruthlessly hits everyone. Meanwhile, armed conflicts are raging all over the world. <…> “The raging virus clearly demonstrates the madness of war. That’s why today I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.”

According to the UN Secretary General, the most vulnerable are paying the highest price – women and children, people with disabilities, displaced people, who are most at risk of becoming victims of coronavirus.
He pointed out that in countries devastated by war, medical care is destroyed, and health workers are often attacked.


“The time has come to block the armed conflicts and jointly focus on the genuine struggle of our whole life. I appeal to the warring parties: stop hostilities,” said the UN Secretary General.


According to him, this is extremely important in order to help create corridors for the delivery of vital assistance. Gutteres also said that the UN will ask countries for two billion dollars to help regions affected by coronavirus.


“The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration are developing a plan in collaboration with host countries to create conditions in refugee camps and settlements where refugees and internally displaced persons are housed in order to prevent the virus from entering these places,” said Secretary General


The World Health Organization on March 11 announced an outbreak of a new coronavirus infection COVID-19 a pandemic. According to the latest WHO data, more than 300 thousand people are already infected in the world, over 12.7 thousand have died.
