Sputnik News – Lebanon has been facing a major economic crisis since the beginning of August, when a massive blast, caused by improperly stored and explosive ammonium nitrate in the Beirut port, resulted in widespread destruction and left 178 people killed and thousands more injured.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun has called for the proclamation of a “secular state”, local media reported.
Under the current political and religious setup, the president of the country must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim, and the speaker of parliament must be a Shia Muslim. These terms are stated in an agreement known as the National Pact between the various political and religious leaders of Lebanon.
