Kelbajar gold deposits to remain on territory of Azerbaijan

Vestnik Kavkaza – Since November 26, demarcation work has been underway in the area of the Sotk (Zod) gold mine, which is located in the liberated Kelbajar region of Azerbaijan on the border with Armenia.

Earlier, head of the Sotk rural community Hakob Avetisyan said that the Azerbaijani military allegedly entered the territory of the field illegally, although it belongs to Azerbaijan.

“The information that the Azeri military entered the Sotk gold deposit and demanded that the employees vacate the territory does not correspond to reality,” head of the information and public relations department of the Armenian Defense Ministry Gevorg Altunyan said.

The press service of the Armenian Defense Ministry added that the work at the border is carried out by representatives of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia. Gold mines remain on the territory of Azerbaijan.

Sotk (Zod) is one of the largest gold deposits in the South Caucasus. According to expert-economist Eldaniz Amirov, according to the data of past years, the gold reserves at the deposit were estimated at 112.5 tons. For many years Armenia illegally exploited this and other deposits in the Kelbajar region, which was occupied until November 25, 2020.
