Situation in Libya

First rescue flight to bring back Libyans stranded abroad departs today

Libya will operate its first flight on Tuesday, to bring back home the Libyans stranded abroad, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Hisham Boshkewat said Monday.

Thousands of Libyans found themselves stuck abroad as governments around the globe declared travel restrictions to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Around 340 people will be flown back today from Turkey to Misurata Airport, onboard the Libyan Airlines, and the Afriqiyah Airways, Boshkewat said, adding that the repatriation flights from Turkey will take around five days.

Arrangements have been put in place for flights back from Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, and the EU countries, after coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Boshkewat explained.

In this context, the National Center for Disease Control stressed that new arrivals must fill out the health follow-up cards that were issued as part of the measures set up to confront the pandemic.

The centre explained that the follow-up cards are important for preserving community health and for the safety of travelers, as well as to track the health status of the returned citizens.

Meanwhile, Dr. Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar, head of the National Center for Disease Control, said that the priority of the health authorities will be to ensure that all those who enter the country are virus-free.

In a press interview, Al-Najjar indicated that the health authorities have taken all necessary measures, in coordination with the relevant authorities, including the anti-Covid-19 consultative committee, emphasizing that the monitoring and follow up teams are present in all outlets of the country and are ready to carry out the checkups and measures required.
