One of the brightest and kindest holidays – the Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries of Europe, Africa, the Americas, Australia, China and Japan every year on the second Sunday of May.
This holiday officially has been over a hundred years old. Although, the origins of Mother’s Day celebrations may be found in the spring festivals of ancient Greeks, which they dedicated to Rhea – the mother of the great god Zeus. In the early 1600, the tradition of celebrating Mothering Sunday appeared in England. On this day, which was celebrated on the second Sunday of Lent, mothers were honored. The day was declared as a holiday, so everyone can pay a visit to mothers.
The Mother’s Day we celebrate today goes back to the beginning of 20th century. In 1907, a young American woman, Anna Jarvis from West Virginia, in memory of her mother, who prematurely passed away, launched an initiative to honor all mothers. Anna wrote letters to state institutions, legislative bodies, prominent persons with a proposal to devote one day a year to honor mothers.
Her efforts were crowned with success in 1910. Virginia was the first state to recognize Mother’s Day as an official holiday. In 1912, the International Mother’s Day Association was established with the aim of spreading a conscious celebration of this day. Although in essence it is a celebration of eternity: from generation to generation for each of us, mother is the most important person in our life. Since 1914, this holiday received official status in the United States, through a decree signed by Woodrow Wilson.
Undoubtedly, Mother’s Day is one of the most touching holidays, because from childhood until the last days we all carry in our souls a unique image – the figure of our mother, who will understand, forgive, always take pity and will selflessly love no matter what happens.
The happiness and beauty of motherhood in all ages has been sung by the best artists and poets. And it is no coincidence – we can determine the degree of culture and well-being of society by the level of how a woman is honored by state. Happy children grow up in a friendly family and under the care of a happy mother.
