Barzani: ‘All parties must be represented in new Iraqi government’
The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq, Masrour Barzani, stressed on Tuesday the necessity of representing all parties in the new federal government.
This came during Barzani’s meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Government, Mohamed Ali Alhakim, according to a statement of the Presidency of the KRG.
During the meeting, the two officials stressed the importance of stabilising the situation in Iraq and forming a government that represents all parties and enjoys the confidence of the majority of Iraqis.
The statement pointed out: “It was also stressed that the incoming federal government should have good relations with the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, neighbouring countries and the international community.”
After Alhakim met with Kurdish officials in Erbil, he went to the city of Sulaymaniyah, to inaugurate his ministry’s there, and comply with political figures as well as the administration of the governorate.
In early February, Iraqi President Barham Salih appointed Mohammed Tawfik Allawi to form the government in 30 days, which will be presented to parliament to grant it confidence.
Since the start of October 2019, Iraq has witnessed unprecedented protests, punctuated by violence, leading to the death of more than 600 people, according to the country’s president, Barham Salih, and Amnesty International.
The protesters demanded appointing an honest independent Prime Minister who had not previously held higher government positions, away from subordination to political parties and neighbouring countries, in addition to the departure of the entire political class, which ruled the country since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003 and holding accountable those who have been accused of corruption and wasting state funds.
