Afghan government forces have retaken control over Saighan district

by Sputnik News

The Afghan government forces have retaken the Saighan district of the central province of Bamyan, TOLOnews reported on Friday.

The restoration of control over Saighan was announced by the Afghan Defence Ministry, the TOLOnews broadcaster reported. Further details of the operation remain unknown.

The situation in Afghanistan is escalating amid the ongoing withdrawal of the US forces from the country, which raises the threat of the new rise of the Taliban Islamist movement*.

According to a tracker by the Foundation for Defence of Democracies’ Long War Journal, the Taliban has so far seized control of at least 212 districts in the country, while the Afghan government is in charge of 70 districts – and about 116 districts remain contested.
