Large elections are being held in Turkmenistan today – the people of the country elect a new Mejlis (parliament), as well as members of the people’s councils of regions, districts, cities and local self-government. All three parties participate in the elections. The turnout for six hours of voting is 61.68%.

“Before 15:00, 74.48% of voters cast their votes in the elections to the deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan”, the CEC website reports, TASS reports.

The voting started at 07:00 (05:00 Moscow time). There is no threshold for voter turnout, and elections will be considered valid with any number of people voted.

In total, there are 2,602 polling stations in Turkmenistan that serve 3,496,475 registered voters in a country of 6.2 million people. Another 42 have been established at the diplomatic missions and consulates of Turkmenistan abroad.

In total, 125 deputies will be elected to the Mejlis, 258 candidates are running for their seats. Let us remind you that in January the country reformed its parliament, it became unicameral again. At the same time, the highest representative body of power was created – the Halk maslahaty (People’s Council).
